Robot vacuum working on our front hall.

We have this unit as a beta test and it has been automatically cleaning our house for the last couple of weeks. It can map a room and make sure to vacuum all floor spaces (not a random bump around). It also remembers where its charger is and when it needs a charge or is done for the day will park itself.

This video shows it finishing up in the 3rd of three rooms, doing the serpentine pattern. It doesn't get close to room edges because it already did that as a first step in mapping the room. When it finishes the job it goes back to the first room to park itself at its charging station -- all by itself!

It is remarkable how much stuff this picks up everyday (we have a labrador retriever so we really need to sweap up hair everyday). very cool!

  • Waste of money, doesn't even vacuum close to the walls, so you should have a lot of rat droppings after it's done.

Hmmmm, where do you get these ideas? The unit maps a room by going around the perimeter of the room first -- this has the vacuum within a fraction of an inch of the wall. After one circuit it then does the serpentine pattern seen in this video to finish up. The initial mapping stage is not on this video but if you search around youtube you can find other videos that show this.

Oh, and my house has *minimal* rat droppings... ;-)

  • I heard your dog barking at the Neato; ours would run away when our Roomba started heading her direction. (The Roomba died, though, so we've just ordered a Neato to replace it!)

  • @DOSBoxMom

Dog is used to the XV now. He just moves out of its way when it gets within a foot or so of him.

  • I had a Roomba and this one looks like it works a lot better, but I can still vacuum in less than half the time. Maybe if I set it for a time when I'm not home, then it might seem a lot faster. We'll see...

  • @plslc1

Yes, you can set a sched so it runs when you are not at home. It will even return to its base for more charge if it doesn't finish before the battery gets low.

  • holy moly lol

XV returns to its dock on its own too. And does different surfaces too. What is the difference that makes you like the Roomba better?

  • @plslc1 I have the XV and the Roomba. I found the Roomba 'bump' annoying when it would hit my nice grandfather clock, so I got the XV. I just come home and the floors are clean with the XV. It's such a non-event with the programmable vacuum time, you just forget about it. -Just empty the bin sometimes. It usually stays clear of obstacles and I hardly ever vacuum. I've never had a problem with it finding it's way home for charging. -Doesn't do the stairs though.

  • these are really cool

  • @Dimitry1996 I don't think it makes any more noise than an upright vacuum... besides.. if you run it when you are not home you don't have to listen to it.

  • @plslc1 the idea is that you vacuum when you are not home... then "you" vacuum in the amount of time it takes to push the "on" button. @Ima Y am, it does a great job overall but the corners are not 100% clean... I don't mind spending 5 minutes going around with a broom and pushing the dirt away from the walls with a broom (I have all wood floors) before I start the bot.
