After the earthquake in Sumatra all that remains of a village of over 400 people is a single bed frame. Yet more extraordinary than the scale of the disaster is the resilience of the Sumatran people.
Hospitals are filled with injured children, homeless people cower under trees to escape the monsoon rains, and the death toll is rising rapidly. "I'm 91 years of age. I've never seen anything as bad as this, tells an elderly man sitting amongst the remains of his hotel. Yet somehow the people remain philosophical. They've lost everything and they're still offering you a cup of tea.
