This is really one of THE best versions on youtube. There is so much emotion and feeling. It's just a pity that the quality isn't better.

Do these pianists see the sheet music in their head and read the notes that way? Or do they memorize and consequently play these incredible compositions by ear?

I think it is because Gvrilov probably, in my humble opinion, never reach where richter is. I am a absolute fan of both, but richter's performance of this ballade is so, as you have said, natural, but at the same time emotional and powerful without being cloy. Gvrilov's performance of this ballade is like a sharp knife stabbing up your heart, strong and sharp, but lacks that little softness, that little sensitivity, that richter has. That is just my opinion
