Apollo 13 was the third Apollo mission intended to land on the Moon. The craft was successfully launched toward the Moon, but the landing had to be aborted after an oxygen tank ruptured, severely damaging the spacecraft's electrical system. The flight was commanded by James A. Lovell with John L. "Jack" Swigert as Command Module pilot and Fred W. Haise as Lunar Module pilot. Swigert was a late replacement for the original CM pilot Ken Mattingly, who was grounded by the flight surgeon after exposure to German measles.

The mission was launched on April 11, 1970 at 13:13 CST. Two days later an explosion crippled the service module upon which the Command Module depended. To conserve its batteries and the oxygen needed for the last hours of flight, the crew instead used the Lunar Module's resources as a "lifeboat" during the return trip to Earth. Despite great hardship caused by limited power, loss of cabin heat, shortage of potable water and the critical need to jury-rig the carbon dioxide removal system, the crew returned safely to Earth on April 17. NASA called the mission a "successful failure".

  • @generalbullmoose Not that surprising since this episode was dealing with whether or not they would get back. Now if Haise had been specifically required to do something critical to their return then it probably would have mentioned that he had gotten sick on the flight back since that would affect his ability to do whatever it was.

  • thanks for posting these vids lengas 32

  • @WENGERGOONER same here, addicted to these videos.. many thanks for the upload

  • I would have called it highly unrealistic if this story was a novel. Just goes to show how in real life exceptional people accomplish seemly impossible deeds when situation calls for it!

  • There was an explosion in a vacuum? More accurate terminology Gawd dammit.

  • I'm surprised they never touched on Haise getting sick during the trip back.

  • @WENGERGOONER same here :D

  • @collegeman1988 this is more detailed and kinda better

  • Thank you so much for posting this! This was my dad's system, and while I took all of this for granted at the tme, I remember when the call came fr ksc, and dad's panic. It was 1 of 2 times that I saw him cry, as his coat and tie flew about while he ran out the door. We did not see him again until days after splashdown . The event changed our lives.

  • This was a dead mission. Appolo 13, laungh at 13.13 hours! maby strange, but its a fact. Also the bad technolagie in that time. OMG, it was a mission like to get on the South pool.
