A talk I gave for the Evansville Freethinkers Holiday Party. It is a very quick, very rough argument, designed more to start a conversation than to completely defend the position.

In short, I argue that it does not matter whether or not God exists; I simply do not care. And moreover, neither do you.

  • Try to learn how to be still first, then I'll listen.

  • @taylorj123 Such a close minded attitude is a recipe for ignorance. Socrates did a poor job of standing still, too, I suppose you wouldn't have listened to him, either.

  • Very interesting speech. I found your point about an eternity in heaven eventually becoming hell especially significant. I'm glad I'm subscribed to you.

  • @niperwiper Thanks for saying so. I hope I continue to please.

  • @MsOhayoOhio All three of those things clearly can be achieved even if one is an atheist. I thought this was a good one though: the need for unconditional love and friendship and the idea that no human completely knows another and that no human completely knows themselves, that no one is perfect and no one (but God of course) can love someone perfectly. Another was the need for fulfillment and the secret of being content and that to know God will give you these things.

  • I found a website called rationalchristianity. The page being titled "Do you need God" In the intro they say "What many people don't realize is that a person's need for God isn't always as obvious as a desire to worship or to believe they'll go to heaven when they die. Many of the needs and longings that we all share are actually things that prompt us to look for God and that can be fulfilled by him." It then continues to list a series of needs like wisdom, moral behavior, and justice.

  • The idea of eternity we cannot really even fathom. Eternity whether in hell with Satan or heaven with God is a lot to take in. However, the idea of nothing after death is scary too. I agree that belief in a god is not necessary for morality. This is a thought I will have to brood over. Asking philosophical questions about religion is a scary rode to go down as a theist because it makes you question things you don't want to and wish you didn't question.

  • I am now subscribed. I absolutely agree, and I am glad I have a phrase for it now. :-) It is one of (many) reasons why I became an atheist. I realized that my actions weren't dependent on whether Yahweh existed or not. I realized that I wanted to do good and be a good person regardless if Yahweh or any other divine being exists or not. I realized that the existence of Yahweh or any other deity was not important. And I did not care if such a being exists -- or not.
