I just tried to play that with an apple. I think it was not recorded with an apple, but it sounds similar if one uses one. The apple produces thirds! Fun!

Man I loved it when he snatched that apple right out of Harpo's mouth. & used it like a guitar slide on the keys. It lent a sort of hurdy gurdy sound to the piano. Yeah.... Chico was the man. :o)

I think they knew, they didn't need it. Doesn't wealth make people soft , with a pompous air of entitlement? Those were exactly the kind of people they made their living spoofing.
