Here's a clip from a wonderful get-together sponsored by Jerry and Cathy Hill. Personnel are:

Jerry Hill - fiddle
Tom Ellis - mandolin
Jeff Large - banjo
Doc Hamilton - bass
Keith Kimbell - flattop

Apologies to Doc... only his hands made it in the frame. More later, with Doc's face! A privilege to attend, glad to share it with you guys.

I don't know the name of the song... it's a famous Scruggs breakdown, IIRC. Plenty of banjo tuning going on... not that I'm against the tuning of a banjo, you understand, but for some reason he has to tune it during the song? You figger it out...

  • awesome! do you guys ever perform in public around central Texas?

  • @chitown1966 ;

I'm a fly on the wall here... these folks play as the Grey Sky Boys...

a regular at the Nutty Brown Cafe, among others. See their other tunes on my channel.. you may have to hunt, look for stuff near this date.

I got to play some washtub with them during warm-up... a peak experience.

    I'm a rocker... that's stuff's hard! Tricky timing, turn-arounds... too cool.

    TFW.

  • You are just kidding about the tuning during the song - right?

It is supposed to be played like that. Take a look at a video of Earl Scruggs playing the song. He does the same thing. It gives it a similar sound as playing with a slide on those notes.

  • pulled yer leg... they make special tuners for that (Scruggs tuners?) with adjustable stops. Too cool.

  • wow, what I wouldn't give to walk into a party like this...heaven...this is what country [bluegrass] is all about....

  • Guys, hold on to that banjo player, he is the only one on all of youtube who can play the song right. Keep it up.

  • You guys sound great. Really enjoyed the pickin and grinnin. Keep up the good work.

  • Looks like I've been to place like that !

Sleepy dog, music coming from open windows.

Now transpose that Hill Country setting to

to Central LA ... or E. Austin, 'bro yelling rap, gluzzling 45's, and a pit pull at every door ...
