A modern dance piece based on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, choreographed by Staycee Pearl for Hope Academy's theater students in grades 7 thru 12. Performed during Hope Academy's 2008 showcase, "Myths, Fables and Realities," at the Kelly-Strayhorn theater on May 31 and June 1.
The Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice
Orpheus, the fist mortal to play Mercury's lyre, made such beautiful music, all of nature seemed to draw near to listen. Flowers blossomed, trees bowed and beast gathered. When he returned from helping Jason and the Argonauts on their quest for the Golden Fleece, he fell in love, courted, and wed the beautiful maiden, Eurydice. Eurydice loved him as much and danced in the sun while he joyfully sang and played the lyre. The two lived in perfect bliss until the faithful day when Eurydice was bitten by a serpent while relaxing in the woods. She cried out to Orpheus, though he was too far way and could not hear. When Orpheus finally learned the tragic news, Eurydice was already dead and he was terribly grief stricken. He gave up on music and sat alone crying n the woods. Although Orpheus ventures on to be one of the first mortals to enter and under world and return to retrieve his beloved Eurydice, our dance version ends with creatures of the earth consoling Orpheus as Eurydice settles at the feet of Hades, the king of the underworld.

I watched "Orpheus and Eurydice" at my college today--it was a modern dance thing, too. But it was a TON weirder & crazier than this, and everyone wore no top and pasties. And straps-on backlit to look like erections. Then they simulated orgies. Sandwiched in between was the actual legend. I am not joking at all. It was abso-effing-lutely amazing.
