Part two in Congressman Shimkus's speech series urging United States Senators to stand up to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and advance a permanent, geological repository for high-level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain. This segment addresses the waste situation at the retired Zion, IL nuclear power plant just 1300 feet from Lake Michigan.
A terrible dilemma they've created for the earth's people! After Yucca, what then? There is no safe solution at this point. Nuclear power plants and their waste products practically blanket N. America; and they continue building more plants as we type. There are fewer and fewer safe places to live since the advent of Nuclear Power. If truth were told, Am. is already a huge nuclear waste dump. People have no idea!

@olga2415 Agreed! Shut them ALL down! In the meantime what do we do with all the waste we already have? They all keep hoping science will save them and give them an easy out. There isn't one. Yucca is the most logical of all the evils.

Why doesn't congressman Shimkus allow the waste to be stored in his back yard or underneath his home? THAT would be a great place for it. In reality, Nuclear Power should be SHUT THE HELL DOWN all over the world!

Logic will never prevail in our congress. MONEY talks. Period. Nothing else. Safety? Nope. If a big corp was in line to make a LOTTA money from Yucca, they'd line the pockets of enough legislators to get this done. Hide their heads in the sand and wait for something awful to happen (like happened in Illinois today leaking radiation into downtown Chicago) and then, and only then will they all jump on the bandwagon and point fingers and act like they give a crap. What a crock.
