Visit my web site at http://www.lot2learn.com for solo transcriptions, midi files and backing tracks.

This is probably one of my absolute all-time favorite songs. I can listen to the original recording by Wayne all day. If, as I strongly believe, the solos by Wayne, Freddie and Herbie contain an entire course in jazz soloing, then the ensemble as a whole is a Doctoral Thesis. I usually don't upload songs this long, as I know my attention span isn't getting any better with age, but I hope you'll stay with this one to the end. There are no annotations on this one (man Doug, I don't know how you crank out so many of these) but maybe I'll give it another go in the future.

Backing track is from the Aebersold collection at www.jazzbooks.com

  • I've been studying this for days now. Thank you for revealing your playing! Those crisp, precise, "groove confirming" comping rhythms are what I'm striving for.

  • I appreciate the comment.

  • 2:55 - Knowing the note you're going to play after a gliss is RAD! It really built up to that note slide down, and usually a player will be overly proud (or surprised at themselves) for building it up like that and stop after a glissando... but having a plan after that is super kick ass.

  • While not a true gliss, it's actually a D major triad second inversion played rapidly descending: A-F#-D-A and then ending on an Ab to coincide with the Ab7 being played in the left hand.

  • best version on tube

  • Thanks for the comment.

  • it doesn't matter how we analyse your playing, its pure jazz, who are bass and drums? very good too.I shouldn't speak any evil.

  • @valvetrom no don't think so..... you can play the dorian scale over that Cm11 and/or minor pentatonic over Cm11 and Db∆ (sounds the best for me...)

  • Spelling is PHRYGIAN, based on 3d , Locrian is based on 7th of a scale. You are playing very well. also filmed well for finger positions

  • @valvetrom Actually I think it's in prygian.

  • Is the first part LOCRIAN ?

  • Awesome playing! Anyone you've transcribed playing this tune other than the guys on the shorter album?

  • perfectly said operateinunison
