The United States Antarctic Program operates McMurdo Station (McM) on Ross Island, Antarctica. The station houses scientists and support staff focused on understanding many facets of polar science, from earth and marine sciences to climate change. During the Austral summer (October-February), McM houses one of the largest communities in Antarctica: 1200 people; during the winter, only 200 people occupy the station. McM is located on Ross Island in the western Ross Sea, and is accessible by ship during the summer. Ross Island is a volcanic island, and cinder cones are a stark reminder that the southern-most active volcano in the world, Mt. Erebus, is located here.
