@wildhias I heard somewhere that his father is the one who had the idea for it and he told Mr niles and he took it from there

@ceb2633 aha - didn't know that, because in a youtube clip he said that the he wrote that song in 1908 - and Wikipedia says indeed that he did both transcribing songs from oral sources and wrting new ones - and that he composed that one

when John Jacob Niles wrote it - than it is not a traditional - or am i wrong?

I have John Jacob Niles huge book; collections of traditional American folk and where it came from. He mainly compiled a huge collection, I doubt he wrote any. He sang some, in a quavery voice. We can thank him for his lifelong studies.

@ceb2633 Niles was a songwriter as well. This was his; he wrote when he was 16, but didn't perform it until much later.

I didn't know this was an old folksong. I know this song in the version of Cliff Richard
" I'm looking out my window ". Please check this out you will hear the same tune.
