It is due to our soundsystem and combination system of letters...you see we can learn to make nearly any sound because of our variatie of sounds in speech. For example the Japanese people cannot pronouce the rolling R as most europeans can....Aside from this example I think that the dutch have the advantage over most people because of their speech and the ability to copy sound. Plus the fact that we're a small country and depend upon our international trade.

My point was that dutch can speak lanuages mostly that are in the indo european language family.

@sujoms: Chinese is a big language, but not spread enough it's mainly spoken in Asia. Hungarian isn't really an international language. Arabic same story as for Chinese, it's way too concentrated in a relative small area.

@salazar55555: I don't think the English are 'lazy'. It's just way too easy for the British, everywhere they come they get service in their native language. Just because English is a big international language. We Dutch don't have that luxury... if I end up outside the Netherlands, there's almost certainly no one who speaks Dutch. So we Dutch learnt quickly to adapt ourselves and learn the important languages. Thus: English, German, French and Spanish.

i think it's great that the dutch can speak so many different languages, I'm English and only speak English, we are lazy people and just expect everyone to speak English. We should be more like you guys, the dutch know more languages than any other country in the world and that is impressive
