This video shows me blowing up two small sections of pencil lead (graphite bound with wax) by shorting 1800W (36V current limited to 50A) across it. The graphite rapidly heats to several thousand degrees C, exploding in a brilliant white flash. The entire test was done on a sheet of drywall to minimize any fire risk, and jumper cables were used to carry the current.
