  • does making your metabolism faster make you lose weight quicker?

  • @TheBicyclemagic - it does, that's why exercise is such a great way to lose and maintain weight loss. Conversly, starvation diets are counterproductive on the long run due to their tendency to lower the metabolic rate.

  • I was told to find your BMR for the day you just multiplied your weight in KG by 24. Is this accurate or not?

  • @OwenGTA - Multiplying one's weight in kg by 24 gives a reasonable estimate of the daily caloric needs, which include the BMR and calories expended by activity.

  • 1,000 calories/day is doable, if one wants to lose weight. As you said, a balanced, healthy diet with a vitamin supplement and staying physically active are the ingredients to make it work.

  • Obviously the body cant survive on less than 500 calories, but is it possible to keep a healthy body consuming only 1000 calories? on well balanced diet of carbs protein and fat; accompanied by say a vitamin supplement...Thanks.

  • It can happen rather quick. For example, if one goes on a VLCD (less than 500 calories/day) or fasts for a few days, the body reacts by slowing its metabolism down in a matter of days... I've seen people on such diets with their resting metabolic rate reduced to almost half.

  • They are quite accurate. The next best thing would be VO2 measurements, but that is usually a lot more involved than doing it in front of your computer :-)

  • how long would it take for your metabolism to become slow?...thanks.

  • How accurate are the calculators?...Thanks!
