1. New Encyclical: Caritas In Veritate: After months of delay, Pope Benedict released his third encyclical, Caritas In Veritate, or charity in truth. An encyclical is a letter from the Pope on a topic he considers of great importance. Certainly, the topic in this one is a subject on everybodys mind: the global economy. The Pope says that profit should not be the goal of economic systems, but instead, the means to an end. Benedict also touches on other topics, including the environment, the United Nations, and life issues. For some analysis, our Nathalia Ortiz visited with David Gibson. Hes a well-known author on religion. Hes also a journalist, who happens to live right here, in Brooklyn. Gibson most recently wrote The Rule of Benedict. Its a close-up look the current Pope, from the time he was known as Cardinal Ratzinger.
2. Giglio Feast: The Feast of the Giglio is a celebration that practically takes over the streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn in July. I spoke earlier in the week with a couple of men involved in the planning of the 12-day festival: Msgr. Joseph Calise and Dr. Philip Franco, both of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in Williamsburg.
