Lecturer in Central Asian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, Dr Shirin Akiner has been condemned by human rights groups, liberty campaigners and Craig Murray (ex-UK Ambassador in Tashkent) as an apologist for brutal Uzbek dictator President Karimov. This short report on the Andijan massacre concludes with an interview with Dr Akiner in which she attempts to downplay and justify the horrific murders by Karimov's regime.

In late 2005, shortly after this video was first broadcast, complaints against Akiner flooded in to the then Director of SOAS, Colin Bundy. Mr Bundy, to the outrage of many, publicly defended Akiner in her justification of the massacre of the peaceful Uzbekistan opposition.

SOAS continues to employ Akiner in a prominent role, whilst mainstream British broadcast media outlets appear to have decided to no longer invite her to comment on Central Asian affairs.

Viewers may wish to complain to her present boss:

Professor Paul Webley, Director and Principal of SOAS

  • there is no doubt that this was a well-organized preplanned uprising against a well-functioning government, with the outside help to create an afghanistan-like situation where a puppet regime bows down to its western masters.

  • "a puppet regime bows down to its western masters"

This is the status quo in Uzbekistan.

  • Shirin Akiner has lost all her credibility and looks like she is in the pay of Karimov. Unbelievable.

  • SHALAVA

  • Akiner hanim,

It was not only armed rebellion, there were more unarmed civillians thant armed terrorists. That is one. The second part of the issue is that, there is no chance to have peaceful demonstrations in Uzbekistan. Holding public meetings without the sanction of the authorities is illegal and obviously no fool asks the authorities to sanction an anti-government protest in that part of the world. You must remember these things.

  • china and russia told uzbekhstan. Behind this interference of rebellin are Usa and England. So uzbekh government want to shov their power as killing uzbekh people.

  • actually prisons contidions in uzbekhstan is very awfull. And no human rights in uzbekhstan. But this situation is not importan western goverments who want to work with uzbekhstan government. ıf Karimov reach agrement with usa and england. you won't see this type of tv programs. This type of programs count are not more.

  • British govermnet give gift to policeman who kill by mistake the brazilian innocent people. l think it is not very important mistaken killing. But giving gift tragedy.

  • Remember this. America and England need work to together with uzbekhstan(with Karimov) and in usa and England a lot of specialist work for goverment. A lot of dictator relation are very good with usa because they work with usa. but when dictators don't want to with usa. A lot of people remember human righnts. in saudi arabia also one of the dictatorship but this is not problem for usa.

  • Actually, there was no 'armed resistance': they were peaceful demonstrators, just as we see in political protests in the West.

Read the Human Rights Watch report 'Burying the Truth: Uzbekistan Rewrites the Story of the Andijan Massacre'

Stop peddling Uzbek regime lies that attempt to justify mass murder.

PS Are you Dr Shirin Akiner in disguise?

    hmmm
