NOTES ON THE MUSIC: OCTET was written in 2002 for an ensemble of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, cello, and piano. The short excerpt presented here is from the beginning of the piece - the total time of the piece is approx. 36 minutes. This music has not yet been performed - this recording was done with eight tracks of synthesizer and uses unique sounds, as opposed to the excerpt from section 3 (posted elsewhere on YouTube), which uses samples of instruments. The dual nature of the ensemble (a woodwind quintet plus a piano trio) is also reflected in the organization of musical materials. OCTET uses a system of complementary modes, which together include all twelve pitches and suggest polytonal harmonies. These modes are linked with specific types of textures and degrees of density. Each aggregate of mode/texture/density is given a name corresponding to playing cards, which are then combined in various ways and featured in different parts of the piece. The 56 cards of the modern deck represent complementary modes. Permutations of a complete 12-tone series are represented by cards associated with the Tarot deck. The section presented here is "The Hermit".
