This is a rare move - An inspection train moves over the seldom used connection between the Times Square Shuttle and the Broadway/7th Ave Line. This track was the original 1904 uptown local track before the building of the portion down 7th Ave. The first subway in New York started at City Hall (now abandoned but preserved) up Lexington Ave., over 42nd St. (now the shuttle) and up Broadway ending at 96th St.. This portion is normally covered by a temporary bridge. My brother and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time late at night on April 23rd 2009. It was quite an experience watching this beast come through. One of the cars that ran on the original innaugurual train is preserved in running condition at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, Maine.

  • We were in the right place at the right time. 25 years in New York when i lived there and never saw this. Used to see the garbage train and the money train all the time around 11 PM

  • That is rare...exactly how do they lift the bridge at Times Square though?

  • It's a steel plate bridge over the tracks. They just lift up the plates and put them aside.
