Saint Bulleh Shah was a humanist and philosopher of a very high order. He was born in Uch, near Bahawalpur, Punjab, in present day Pakistan in 1680. His father, Shah Muhammad Darwaish, was a teacher. He was well educated and intellectually highly evolved but still decided to keep his poetry absolutely down to earth. Shah Inayat Qadiri an eminent sufi saint was his spiritual master. Bulleh Shah practiced the Sufi tradition of poetry. The poetic form employed by Baba Bulleh Shah is called Kaafi. This style of poetry was used by Sufis of Punjab, Sind, Siraiki poets and Sikh Gurus. Bulleh Shah was a contemporary of Sufi poet, Shah Abdul Latif and Waris Shah and also the very famous poet fo Delhi Agra Courts, Mir Taqi Mir who lived only 400 miles away at Agra. Buleh Shah's poetry and philosophy strongly criticizes religious orthodoxy of all kinds and is as relevant today as it was 300 years ago. Bulleh Shah's time was marked with communal strife between various sects of islam and between islam, hinduism and sikhism. It is reported by some sources that Bulleh Shah hailed the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur as a Ghazi, or "religious warrior". Guru Teg Bahadur offered to make the supreme sacrifice for the cause of truth, justice and human right issues and was beheaded by Aurangzeb in Delhi. Baba Buleh Shah Ji's support to Guru Ji caused resentment amongst the ruling elite of that time but this fearless saint stuck to his guns. He openly criticized rituals and superstitions of all kinds in all religious and social practices. His writings are humanistic and provide solutions to the sociological problems of the world. The simplicity with which Bulleh Shah has been able to address the complex fundamental issues of life is what sets him apart from many other preachers who talked of devotion to God almost to the extent of it being an escapist's approach from the harsh realities of their times. As a living saint he was a Murshad or Satguru to many and for many like me he lives in our hearts through his immortal poetry (qualm) as if he has never died. He shed his earthly body in 1757, but lives on spiritually in millions of hearts as a fearless champion of truth, rationality and humanity, without any external drama what so ever. This presentation is created and Uploaded as an offering at the feet of this Universal Saint and for the music and poetry connoisseurs of Indian subcontinent by Balwant Gurunay
