White House Telephone

President Richard Nixon talks with his wife, First Lady Pat Nixon, about their visit with the First Lady of Peru, Consuelo Velasco, and about a recent White House reception. (A section of the conversation was beeped out by NARA censors as "personal." The missing segment is represented here by a five second beep.)

  • Absolutely fantastic. Pat Nixon was a warm and openhearted person not fully appreciated in her time.

  • dick & pat were close....one of the greatest misconceptions was the "plastic pat" mantra....pat was anything, but, plastic....she treated the WH staff with nothing but respect & loved those around her...she supported her husband LIKE ANY WIFE would...i don't know how anyone could read anything on Pat Nixon, and not surmise that she was a loving mother & delightful/respectful person to be around...and, an elegant First Lady...

as we'd say in the south: "Pat Nixon was GOOD people!"

Why, for being an authoritarian President obessed with power?

  • @CounterCultureLives I understand your comment, but I was an adult during both the Nixon and Bush II admins, and I clearly remember both. The difference between Bush & Nixon is that Bush clearly had control over the Joint Chiefs (via Cheney), which was a power that Nixon didn't have.

My comment has nothing to do with attacks on US soil, nor Congressional empowerment acts. If you had lived back then, you'd remember how close we came to a mutinous situation in our military leadership.

  • @moproducer Run that by me again?? NIXON brought us closer to a military coup than any other president?? Have you ever read of The Bush Administration?? The crimes of 9-11?? The Patriot Act??

    Dude, get an education!!

  • @fox9ninja the thing was, it did happen. when faced with this test, Nixon failed us.it showed us who he really is. it's like saying if so and so wouldn't have murdered someone, they would have been seen as a great person.

  • I don't know anything about Pat Nixon, and I suspect the man who became President was not the man she married. I do know that Nixon had the charm and warmth of a politician, ice in his veins, and the capacity to lie to everyone; his staff, his cabinet, and the American people. No wonder the US came closer to a military coup under Nixon than any other time in our history.

  • I really wish Watergate had never happened. Nixon would have been seen as one the greatest presidents of the 20th century.

  • I wonder if she knew the conversation was recorded?

  • Oliver Stone's biography "Nixon" displayed a cold and awkward relationship between the president and Pat. This tape proves that portrayal of their relationship was inaccurate. This conversation reveals a warm, genuine, and close relationship between the two. The Nixons were one of the closer presedential couples.

  • Consider how nice and conversational RN was with his wife, compared to how cold, distant, and philandering JFK was with Jackie.
