(Edmonton) Twenty-four teams of University of Alberta mechanical engineering students burned the midnight oil over the last few weeks to design and build remote-controlled soccer robots to compete in a penalty-kick soccer shootout. The robots took to the field yesterday, which was a scale model of soccer pitch that fit on top of workbench in the mechanical engineering workshop. .
More than 100 students in second-year mechanical design are required to be part of a team that constructs a self-controlled, fully mechanical robot powered by an electric motor that can shoot a ping-pong ball into a net..
Before the soccer robots can shoot at the net, the machines have to gather up 32 ping-pong balls and load them into the shooting mechanism.
The MecE 260 course supervisors chose soccer as this terms theme as a tribute to the World Cup of Soccer that goes this summer in South Africa.
