When you have a plugin (Flash in this case) on your page, the browser hands complete control of how that area is rendered to the plugin - it doesn't render anything itself in that area. That's what causes this. Setting wmode causes Flash to listen to what the browser says should be in that area, fixing your lightbox issue.
