Ariga vs Takahashi - 11th World Kendo Championships Santa Clara 2000 Men's Team Semi-Finals

This is a rare video found in our e-bogu.com video library. The match that almost changed the history. Ariga-sensei (currently 7 Dan, 6 Dan in 2000) fought against Hideaki Takahashi Sensei from Kyoto Police, in an unforgettable Semi-Finals Taisho match.

Canada and Japan were tied after Sempo and Jiho matches. Canada won the Chuken match and it was leading Japan. Japan came back on the Fukusho match. Whoever wins the Taisho match would win the semi-finals. If Ariga had won the Taisho match, Canada would have won over Japan for the first time in the Kendo history. There were very close points. One at the start of the match when Ariga hit his favorite Katsugi Kote, which many thought was a Yukodatotsu. Later in the match, Takahashi goes for a Tobikomi Men and Ariga hits a Kaeshi Do. The entire gym thought it was Ariga's point. One referee (Shimpan) puts up a flag for Ariga, but the other two did not give the points. Ariga ends up losing the match, and Japan advances to the finals with Korea, who won over Brazil.

I know it's part of the culture of kendo to accept defeat even when happens by a judging mistake an it's a pretty noble atitude but but this one must ahve been a very difficult to not been sad about it hahaha Ariga obviously dominate the match =/ In the kaeshi do point after the strike looks like he almost didn't belive that the flags was not up hahaha
