Big Maurice was the man in a number of music-clubs in Brugge (Belgium) between the 60's and 90's, all called 'de Spiegel', 'the Mirror'. Brötzmann-Van Hove-Bennink, Hans Reichel, Mal Waldron, Om, Yamashita trio, Evan Parker, S.A. Johansson amm were regular performers at his cafés or improvised theatres. M recorded most of these concerts with his Revox tape-recorder. These tapes are still kept by M's widow Rika. The library of Bruges remains uninterested. Maurice never thought highly of my guitar-playing and neither did I of his personal taste, but at 'De Spiegel' I got entrance to a whole range of free music concerts and records which were of a lasting importance to me. June 1990 M invited 10 musicians to jam at his loft. I was one of them. M called that gig 'double five for fifty five' : he had become 55 then. And now I have too, 19 years later. To 'the highpriest of freejazz' , as one journalist wrote, and to his temple(s). j
