Partial replication of Milgram et al's (1969) study by Dr. Julie Coultas (1996). In this clip from a larger study
groups were covertly videoed staring up at buildings for 1 minute.

  • Out of curiousity - which university was showing this video? If you take a simple definition of conformity - the act of fitting into the group - then, yes, this is behavioural conformity. Note this is a field experiment. It is not the same as the Asch type studies which were conformity in perceptual judgement.

  • @HWingo I'm taking a social psychology class right now and this is an example of conformity and our teacher actually showed up this video.

  • @freethug I suspect conformity might require a step beyond being curious about what others are staring at, e.g., not only do we all look at the same thing, but we all express the same opinion regarding the thing we're looking at. But then I'm just a speaker of English, not a social psychologist.

  • @HWingo yes this is conformity.

  • @HWingo This is social contagion

  • When one person is staring at something, other people are curious about what he's looking at. This is "conformity"?

  • Lovin it lol
