@meltzerboy: I also think Melchior's performance - at the age of around 70 - is great. I should be proud as a Dane. But a few weeks ago we had invited a couple (both Danes) for dinner and I thought I'd play Melchior's version (on YouTube) for them on my laptop. They liked it very much, but then asked me for the Caruso version (knowing that I like Caruso).

They both thought (as I do) that in this song Melchior is no match for Caruso.

Of course, the English version is well-known. (John McCormack recorded the English version around the same time (I think) as Caruso's French version.)
