Saturday, I found a cockchafer behind the house (Melolontha melolontha) lying on the ground exhausted. I held my finger near him, and he crawled onto it. Cockchafers can only be seen from the end of April until the beginning of June. After they mated and laid eggs, they die. The larvae live under the ground for three years, then change into a beetle in fall, and after the winter, they emerge out of the ground. The larvae feed on roots, the beetles eat mainly leaves of trees.

Male cockchafers, like the one in this video, have seven leaves on their antennae, females have only six.

April 26th-May 2nd 2009 is my Cockchafer Week: http://jclont.tumblr.com/tagged/cockchafer_week

  • At megotyy :

I picked it up from the ground. It was early in the season. I think it just came crawling out of the soil. It must probably unfold its wings by pumping them up before it can fly.

They can get stuck in anything including hair. They fly rather clumsily.

  • At bus140808: That is unfortunate. These creatures only eat tree leaves and don't bite people. However, I can imagine they startle you with their loud buzz and big paws. Hopefully, you can overcome your fear.

  • @bus140808 dude u got serios problems:

    1. ur desperate after internet attention, i saw u spam this mesage on other similar vids

    2. u narrow minded creature, driven by the fear of the unkown should die because u consume more food anualy then the beetle and u dont produce ANYTHING, there are poor kids and people in this world that deserve ur food and resources more then u

    3. u are prisoner in ur own world, not just in ur home
