Patti LuPone performs "Blow Gabriel Blow" for George and Barbara Bush at the White House with the U.S. Marine Band in 1988. She first sang the song a year earlier when playing Reno Sweeney in the Lincoln Center revival of "Anything Goes."

"With her burst of Lucille Ball red hair, a trumpet's blare in her voice and lips so insinuatingly protruded they could make the Pledge of Allegiance sound lewd, Ms. LuPone's Reno is a mature, uninhibited jazz dame: loose, trashy, funny, sexy."

  • @Jarrod005 I'm very surprised too that she didn't win. Remember though, Patti faced a lot of competition that year from Joanna Gleason as the Bakers Wife from Into the Woods. Gleason's classic performance was very deserving as well. Plus Patti didn't dance almost at all in the 87 revival unlike Sutton in the 11 revival

  • Not once did she let a note fall. That at the end... I couldn't believe it. Love this!!!

  • I don't like Sutton nearly as much as Patti, duh Foster has talent, but to me it's like Patti IS Reno.

  • YES this is how this song should be sung! THIS is Reno!

  • It still baffles me she didn't win the Tony for this.

  • Well holy crap. I have to say she sings and sells the hell out of this song. This is crazy good. That being said, she can't dance, which poses a problem for the role overall, and she's definitely a bit of an over-actor. I prefer Sutton overall, but I'll be damned if this isn't just the best rendition of this song I've ever heard.

  • @bpark9thdmIA No, no, no. You've got it all wrong, Walt1896 (a.k.a. bpark9thdmIA, lmajoy94, RadiationViolet, hazeleyedreamer11, WendlaBergman, mmbr01rrf, etc.)! Patti's presence alone throws Sutton's performance into oblivion. Patti performs better in all respects and Sutton Foster is THE nobody next to her.
