PlusNTSB: Confusing Signs Factor in Ga. Bus CrashNTSB: Confusing Signs Factor in Ga. Bus CrashThe Associated PressInvestigators for the National Transportation Safety Board say confusing highway signs and a lack of passenger safety features contributed to the deaths of five college baseball players in an Atlanta bus crash last year. (July 8)[Notes:wsb: shots of bus on interstate] Calls for change after a charter bus plunged off an Atlanta overpass last year-- killing five members of an Ohio college baseball team, the driver and his wife. [Notes:wsb: shots of bus on interstate]Federal investigators say the driver thought he was getting on an HOV lane. But he actually drove onto an elevated exit ramp, plowed through a stop sign and then hurtled from an overpass onto the interstate below. [Notes:sound: aptn] 13:01:30SOT: ACCIDENTS WILL OCCUR, HOV LANES CAN BE CORRECTED. MY SON CAN NOT BE BROUGHT BACKJOHN BETTS/SON KILLED [Notes:ap photo: driver]Officials say confusing highway signs, driver error and lack of passenger safety led to the fatalities. [Notes:aptn: ws parents in washington] And now the parents of several crash victims are in Washington to demand stronger bus safety regulations. [Notes:aptn: sound]13:02:50SOT: MY HOPE IS SOMETHING GOOD WILL COME OUT OF THIS TRAGEDY. BARRY MESLEY/SON INJURED [Notes:wsb: aerials of crash] Among them-- more driver training, stronger roofs, shatterproof window glazing and mandatory seat belts. John Betts, who lost his son, notes the NTSB made a similar set of recommendations 40-years ago. But they were never made into law. [Notes:aptn sound]12:SOT: HAD ANY OF THOSE RECOMMENDATIONS BEEN IMPLEMENTED, OUR SONS WOULD BE ALIVE TODAY. (put bites together). That's not a wish. That's not a fantasy. That's a fact. The apathy has gone on too long.."john betts/father [Notes:aptn: bluffton campus] Five athletes from Bluffton University were killed in the March 2nd crash. And 28 others were hurt. A highway safety advocate saysthe wreck the highlights the need for motorcoach safety upgrades. [Notes:aptn sound]13:10:05SOT: EVERYDAY WE'RE PUTTING OUR KIDS ON MOTORCOACHES TO GO TO CAMP OR ON A FIELD TRIP. MOTORCOACHES HOLD 60 PEOPLE AND YET WE LACK SOME OF THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL BASIC SAFETY SYSTEMS.JACKIE GILLIAN/highway safety advocate [Notes:wsb: bus ax]There had been nine accidents at the site between 1997 and 2007, three of them fatal. And the drivers in all of the crashes were from outside the Atlanta area. One investigator noted that 20 million drivers had successfully navigated the exit over a 10 year span. And the investigator said the driver missed two signs warning there was a stop ahead. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

IDIOT DRIVER. "Missed two signs warning of STOP ahead" ?
If unsure of what is happening, slow and be able to stop if necessary.
Look ahead and see what you are approaching BEFORE you get to it.
No excuse.

More legislating in action. Terrible accidentt but almost impossible to prevent. Making bus windows shatter proof? what? That would be even MORE dangerous as it would be more likely to catch on fire in a crash, or go into a body of water and then the passengers would either burn alive or drown if trapped inside by shatter proof windows.
