@BonJoviBeatlesLedZep, the joke is that the Monkees were formed as an american parody of the Beatles. They played a rock band in a tv show mimicking playing instruments and without writing their own songs. They were a fake band (at least at the beginning).

Oh god this is hilarious. Even Jack Black's lousy impersonation couldn't kill it. Only a real Beatles fan could get all the references. And Justin Long was great as George!
