Costa Rica has had female candidates for a few elections now, which is great; however, I think Costaricans voted for Chinchilla precisely because she is a woman, not because of her ideas. Her party is one of the most corrupt. Her candidacy was possible not because of herself, but because of men that used her for their own interests. Voting just based on gender is real 'machismo' or 'sexismo'. Nicaragua was the 1st with a fem. presid., and this is one of the most 'machista' countries in America.

It is still progress for a woman to hold the position.  Regardless of how she got there, her being there will forever change the perception (especially in little girls' minds) of what women can accomplish.

@Lambeestaca No way, my presence in the US is for academic reasons, not political. And nobody gets silenced in the US for disagreeing with some issues of the previous (Bush) administration, this is a true democracy. People are allowed to disagree with each other here, that is what debates are for.

The things that were revealed by Wikileaks only confirmed what Otton Solis was already warning us about: the involvement of the US Government and the PLN, Chinchilla's party, to weaken the opposition! Wikileaks cannot possibly be a point in favour of your argument, it is quite the contrary! And again, I can't believe you think that PAC is the 3rd most important party, while it is 2nd, gosh! ur ignorance frightens me

@Lambeestaca No!! Are you serious? PAC is 2nd!! It has been so since 2006! You are clearly misinformed. And please, yes, read more, you are clearly not informed and yet you are writing about things you don't even know about, as you admit it yourself. I think that just proves my point. There are NO scandals involving PAC as there are involving PLN. And for your information, Solis is an invited professor at the Univ. of Notre Dame, shares many views with the democrats, as the CAFTA voting showed.
