Osprey not the best source of info? Is there anywhere else that strings together so much info and with pretty pictures to boot? Knights at Tournament is the best man, learnt everything from it.

Well, I would hardly consider the Osprey books as the end all and be all of historical accuracy, but if you are going for an overall "look" they are nice. The Ecranche shield was developed specifically for jousting, especially after 1500.
Truly a fine beast. Is that squire dribbling slightly though?
