Your absolutely right. What is there to be offended. All Obama wants is for kids to be brought smarter, and to be able to speak different language, so that it can benefit them in the long run. Why get offended, why not take advantage of this, try to learn another language, so that you can be more employable. Sometimes as an American im very dissapointed when ppl get upset after hearing things like this. It's all effort and hardwork, and u can learn. Why get lazy!! Y not be productive!

I'm really surprised about how offended certain people react on learning another language.

I myself speak 4 languages and I can tell you it really opens doors when you don't limit yourself to 1 language. You get a way better understanding of the world and about other cultures. It has nothing to do with neccessity or being able to speak with foreign workers.

And when you're young and exposed to another language you also pick it up very easy. It's a benefit for life and it cannot harm you at all.

I don't get your logic. Don't you think it's dumb to say that Americans should learn Spanish because Spanish speakers are moving to the US? Germans used to be the largest ethnic group in the US. Americans did not have to learn German.

American should learn a other language besides english!! and im sorry but spanish is the first u need to learn !! As u know the second majority of people that live in america speak spanish !!! Go learn .. Cause i speak spanish and english and im gonna learn Japanese ect. cause i love to learn a new language.

As someone who speaks 6 languages fluently, it's irrevelant. He is confusing the issues. Yes, Americans should speak more than on language, great. But the focus is if immigrants can learn the language of the U.S. And in the U.S., it makes no difference if you speak 1 or 100 languages, sad to say. Somehow the Hispanics manage to impose their language on the rest of the country whereas everyone else is obligated to learn (look at all the anti-French laws passed in U.S. history) English.

C'mon, this country was founded by immigrants. Look, normally I will disagree with Obama all the time especially on his political views but I think that all Americans should learn at least more than one language.

You're absolutely right, and not to mention the benefits for your self-esteem, a better understanding of your own language, and it helps your brain work better. I started studying Russian at 13, and if I hadn't, I wouldn't be going to Russia next year as an exchange student. I've also noticed that my math abilities have improved.
