    Hi Tom6093,

When you start a new hive from a package of bees, they have no comb. You have to feed them sugar syrup to give them what they need to build new comb. After they have built comb, and a nectar flow starts, then they can start storing it and make honey. Then you stop feeding them. Also, in late winter you may have to feed them to get them on thru. Yes, we should leave the bees plenty of their honey since it is the best food for them. I do.

  • Don't the bees eat their own honey

  • I use a toothpick to poke a bunch of tiny holes in the bag. It works really well. I was feeding some of my hives way out in the country and I forgot to take a blade. I had a few toothpicks so I tried it and now that's the only way I do it. I've tried jars and frame feeders but I think bags are the best. No drowned bees, No broken jars or too many jars taking up too much room.

  • How often and when do you do this?

  • So the bags can only be used once?

  • It would be even cheaper if you used a plastic welder/sealer and ordinary freezing bags.:-)
