Drum Lesson #1: 3 measure 8th note basic rock beat with 1 measure fill

This is being posted for the forum members over at Doc's Rock Band Mods. A basic 8th note rock beat for 3 measures and a 1 measure fill that contains flams on the snare, 8th notes on the kick, and 16th notes on the toms.

Namike recently started drum lessons and this was his assignment this week. Some members of the forum wanted to see/hear it played, so I recorded it last night.

This video was mostly an experiment to see how my new drum mics and mixer setup would sound. All I used in this one was 2 kick mics and 1 condenser overhead mic.

This is a Pearl Session Studio Birch drum set with Pearl Eliminator pedals and Sabian AA & AAX cymbals.

When I try to do the fills where you start on the snare, go down the toms, and come back to the snare again I can't hear it like a good fill... and other people do, is it because im on the seat and not on the front?? Or am I not used to the sound of the drum kit?

@2fast2jack Could be that, or it could be the way the drums are tuned.

Hey David thanks for putting this up. Question what kind of heads you got on your drum?

I believe those are Aquarian Studio-X coated heads, and an Aquarian Hi-Energy on the snare.

David, i love the sound of your ride. I know you use Sabian cymbals but which ride do you have? I love to pick one of those up!

It's the Sabian AAX 20" Metal Ride. I love it too. :)

excellent!!! just nailed the first beat at various speeds throwin in some of ma own stuff,, so fun to play and you can go anywhere with it,, ur a great teacher thanks dude, p.s any1 got any tips on the bottom drum heads, i still got pearl protone single ply factory ones, will diff ones give it better sound? (aquarian performance 2s dble plys for top heads), dont wanna look like a dick in a drum shop lol
