Impress the locals when in Amsterdam with these common phrases.

Other Information
Language - Dutch

Most people in Amsterdam speak English and all the street signs are in English also, but speaking Dutch does help you get along. So, here are the top ten phrases in Dutch you need to know.

Number ten: To locate a bathroom you need to ask, "Waar is het toilet?"

When buying a ticket you can ask for a single way ticket. Which should be, "Enkele reis?" And for a return ticket, it would be "en retourtje?"

Number eight would be good when you are out of market, "hoeveel kost dit?" Which means, how much does this cost. "Hoeveel Kost dit?"

Number seven is the Dutch phrase for what is your name? Which is, "hoe heet je?"

And number six we have, how are you? Which is, "hoe gaat het?" "Hey, goed, dank you."

To find out if anybody speaks English, you ask. "Spreekt u Egnels?"

This one is a bit of a tough one, if you were to apologize for something. It is, "sorry." Which is kind of like the English sorry but pronounced differently, "sorry."

The number three phrase is "ja" for yes and "nee" for no.

And number two we have greetings, so for good morning you would have, "goedemorgen." For good afternoon it would be, "goedemiddag" and for good evening it would be, "goedenavond."

And the number one phrase is hello, "hallo" or "dag". Dag can also mean, goodbye. I am Martin Bilsborough showing you Amsterdam.

"Hoeveel kost deze" is a bit weird.

It's better to say "Hoeveel kost dit?" for objects near you and "Hoeveel kost dat?" for objects far away from you.
