This is a re-post due to a playback problem with the previous video.

The song "Paradise" was composed by Nacio Herb Brown and was featured in "A woman commands" (1932), Pola Negri's first "Talking picture". In the movie she performs the song in English. A year later she recorded a French version for the Ultraphon label. While the movie did nothing for Pola's career in Hollywood, the song became very succesful. I really like this elegant version by Bert Ambrose and his orchestra.

Pola Negri - a legendary lady of the silent era - recorded a number of 78rpms in the 1930s - mostly in Russian and German. In 1935 her movie career got a boost when she was cast by the talented Willi Forst in his melodrama "Mazurka" - which was a tremendous succes (the movie was shot-for-shot remade in Hollywood as "Confession" with Kay Francis in the lead). She worked and rexcorded in Germany until 1938 (when she was not filming, she lived in France). At the outbreak of the Second World War she returned to the USA but her career was virtually over...

  • Thanks for a superb song. This recording was made in London on the 6 th of May 1932. The voice we hear is Sam Browne. He was the vocalist in almost all of the many recordings made by Ambrose and His Orchestra in 1932.

  • Thank you very much for the info!
