SCPA Stories is a series of interviews by the SCPA class of 1990. Around the gathering of their 20 year reunion, the alumni ask each other about experiences of racial diversity during and after school.
SCPA, School for the Creative and Performing Arts, was founded in 1973 as a part of a city-wide desegregation program. A 1974 lawsuit "Bronson vs. the Board of Education" was resolved by a voluntary agreement reached by the plaintiffs and the Cincinnati Board of Education. There was a requirement that the alternative schools maintain a racial balance reflecting the population of Cincinnati. SCPA and the system of alternative public schools was under federal court supervision until 1993.
A core theme the SCPA class of 1990 explores in these interviews is whether the desegregation initiative made a difference in their lives.
