@euromellows I am planning to join the RAN after school. What is it like? I need a first person view. And whats RAS?

My Dad was on the Vampire back in the 70s before transferring to Subs. I had the honour of following in his footsteps and joined the RAN roughly 30 years after he did. Thanks for posting this clip! I remember doing many a RAS before paying off in 2009.

I was on Sydney that trip.ask your father but I swear that day Vamps came up to fuel and a blow up batman or something I cant remeber exactly, blew away and vamps turned and went back and got it and came back and fueled, I am certain it was this RAS. the film you have of her approaching was after she recovered the stupid blow up that flew of, And I could be wrong but when she approached in the film there is a batman blow up on top of the bridge so that may be what they went back to get. :-)

Very old school, 696 UHF and AJE

Nice to see the old Bat survives as a museum piece in Sydney Harbour.
Few warships get that honour around the world. Sadly ,majority are scrapped or sunk as fishing reefs. Good old 11, 11. A lucky number indeed.
Will we ever see a HMAS Vampire 2 ? An Aircraft Carrier perhaps?

@princejuchau how was it like ? what was your rank ?

great video clip. I'm a 20 year vet of the US Navy. Signalman. I tried to read the aussie signalman at 1.40 and all i caught was " ..is not alym...".

excellent video, I myself was a stoker on this bat from 1982/4.

I was on the 'bat' in later years, but watching this really brought back memories. Many many thanks. Nothing like a RAS to break the monotony.

My old man was was in the RN based at Devonport watched HMS Terrible aka Sydney built/launched and nice to see a daring class destroyer have you seen the latest daring class type 45 very nice by the way enjoyed the video

Great clip, loved it.
My only criticism is that it would've been nice to see it in normal speed. LW02 never turned that fast!

Hi,
I took the footage from my husband's old 16mm film - no changes of speed were applied by me but maybe the frame rate of converting 16mm to video sped it up a bit.
