Blue angel #7 taking off at republic airport (KFRG) on May 26, 2010 2 days before the air show. Right after he starts rolling for a few seconds he aborts the takeoff. It's hard to see (sorry I was driving down the road and didn't have my HD camera with me!! so mad), but he releases what seams to be the parachute.

ATC is alittle hard to pick up through my phone but it sounded like he said there was a gear trap??? Maybe someone can clarify what really happened.

  • He was testing the arresting gear, no intentions on taking off.

  • @USAF16Pilot Thanks for the clarification!

  • Couldn't tell by the sound quality but it seems like he had an engine failure or some sort of warning light come on during take off, he most likely dropped the hook and caught the arresting gear towards the end of the runway

  • @ainahanau Yea sadly I didn't have my HD camera on me. This was through my cell phone becuase I was just driving past the airport. I know usually they arrive thursday to begin practice but was shocked to see the #7 one day early. I will be there this weekend hopefully to capture better quality vidoes

  • What ever his problem, it was serious enough to drop his hook and take the gear. Trap is the word for taking an arresting gear. You don't test the gear with an aircraft, because after some many traps there has to be inspections on hook and systems. Plus the cables for the gear are only good for so many engagements. Hope this clears it up some.

  • USAF is right. Just testing the arresting gear.

  • There was a bad crash that day on new highway. Be careful!!
