@BKMillMan That's right, however the point was that the stone needs to be able to maintain a sharp edge in order to shave the steel, hence things like sandstone wouldn't work. Thanks for the input tho.

@antagonizerr The spark doesn't come from the stone, it comes from the metal shavings and friction from the file hitting the stone.

@bradwjensen It's onondaga chert. To be honest, you can get a spark out of any dense stone with an edge on it provided your steel is good.

using a larger file you should be able to do this with any king of rock.

where do you get the original flint from?

Not of the flint has no edges on it, he was using a file remember.

fotr better sparks try using a bigger file and strike the file using flint.

The idea was to show people that you can make sparks with a cheap 50 cent file, and that expensive fire steels are nice but not necessary. If you look at the flint striking vid I posted, you'll see how much faster it is to strike the flint with the steel.
