  • Is it normal for the star to be moving st the start?

  • @bubbiesdad

It depends. It can be a static start. Some places will set it up so its turning before you get to shoot it. It can be rigged with a weight loosely connected to one of the arms and a strut to hold the star still. When the strut is pulled away, the weight gets the star spinning. During the first rotation, the weight slips off and the star is left to spin freely. The strut could be pulled by something the shooter does, like opening a door or shooting a separate target.

  • @QuixDraw I've shot at it once in an IPSC match, and once at an IDPA charity event.

Both times I ran out of ammo.

The star can definitely test your skills. When you haven't seen it more than a few times the learning curve is pretty steep.

The common approach is to shoot which ever plate is highest and then work down one side. This way the movement is more predictable and the plates come to your sights. The method is useful because sometimes the star is partially hidden by props or must be shot through a port.
