Aug 2007 - Who do you trust, Doctors, or Western Forest Products? Excerpts from presentations to the SCRD, Local Board of Health Aug 9 & 10 2007. Quotes from the Vancouver Sun: "Dr. Victor Dirnfeld, of Richmond, said the resolution -- calling for safe, clean and reliable drinking water for all Canadians -- was particularly poignant at a time when the Sunshine Coast Regional District is before the courts fighting to stop a "large, rich and powerful" company -- Western Forest Products -- from logging in its watershed. "We need to empower Canadian communities . . . to protect [residents] from the contamination of their water supplies," he said."
"Members of the powerful doctors' lobby group also passed 15 "green" resolutions, including calls for swift government action to protect domestic drinking-water supplies, reduce air pollution and curtail pesticide use. Delegates said the need for urgent action was highlighted by water crises in Walkerton, Ont., North Battleford, Sask., and numerous first nations communities, but even Vancouver, which boasts excellent drinking water, had a health scare last fall after heavy rains turned city water a muddy brown."
