  • A quick explanation of Port tongs: corks in old bottles of wine will be somewhat brittle and Port bottles suffer the added obstacle of the cork being glued to the walls of the bottle by the high levels of sugar so specialized Port tongs are heated until glowing red hot; they are applied with pressure to the neck of the bottle just below the cork; then a towel soaked in ice water is placed on the heated area causing an instantaneous and clean break.

  • good work. I've seen port tongs used before but never something as simple as what you made. I'm going to try this on one of my vintage bottles. Any added tips for a first time try? Did it work for you the first time you tried? Cheers!
