This tutorial shows you how to install ffmpeg, ffmpeg-PHP, Mplayer, and Mencoder in Windows. These instructions can be incredibly difficult to find online, but I've assembled a tutorial and a simple download to make installing these as easy as possible. At the time of publishing this, I cannot find how to install LAME MP3 in Windows.

If you're creating a video sharing website such as a youtube clone script, then you don't need the LAME encoder. That's only for music.
** UPDATE **
I've received several nasty comments on the downloads mentioned in the video ... this video is over 2 years old and I'm pretty sure they are no longer valid nor do I have them hosted anywhere anymore. Please read the comments by others on where to find them at. Thanks!

  • Look, I've gotten a lot of nasty comments in reply to this and I simply won't tolerate that. If you're too stupid to look at the date and realize it's over 2 years old, then you should find something else to do besides slander someone because of your stupidity.

I do not have the files hosted online anymore since they are almost certainly outdated and I no longer run the former website.

The best option for hosting videos is use a video hosting service such as Youtube, Blip, etc.

  • Hey nerddna,

I have a link to my website in the description and I've posted links there. I can't post links in comments here because youtube won't allow you to do so. Just search for my article on this on the website and you'll find the links there.

  • what's sad is not showing in the video WHERE TO GET THE INITIAL FILES...thus making this video quite useless....A for effort. F for lack of common sense.

  • I'm getting the message...

PHP Warning: PHP Startup: ffmpeg: Unable to initialize module

    Module compiled with module API=20060613

  • This installation method is good. Could you send me the link, where to download the ffmpeg sources codes, dll and other files which you mentioned in this video.

  • I am a beginner and need lots of help. Great tutorial, but am missing the beginning, extraction part. I downloaded the files .gz and bz2 files from the ffmpeg site.

Does these files have all the encorder files? Can you please post the link where each component should be downloaded.

    Thanks for your attention.

  • @linuxbox25

    Searched Google

    Very first result.

    Fail from the past.

You are truly shameful to Linux users everywhere.

  • @markhu2 The reason he chose XAMPP is because it is easy to install and can run right under windows with almost zero configuration XAMPP is a totally free server package to use and includes Apache server, MySQL server, FileZilla and a few other options. for most novice users it is the simplest solution and is very stable IMO. The principles are essentially the same under any server configuration. WHY FFMPEG/Mencoder? it is necessary to work with video streaming sites like youtube and phpmotion.

  • @LightEssence37 NOTE: you can download FFMPEG and the codec library for free at this link ffmpeg(dot)org

  • Actually PHPMotion does have an audio section built in, so it may also be necessary to use the LAME MP3 Encoder as well for full local testing functionality...

  • How can i download this ffmpeg?

  • very gud tutorial

  • This video useless to anyone except XAMPP users.. Sure it shows a guy installing some files after downloading them, but doesn't explain why or where he downloaded them. But what about desktop or command-line usage?
