One thing I couldn't figure out, is the point of tossing the pants around. I don't think he did anything to place the image of a bear in the childrens head, as this was taken care of by the placement of the trays, therefore - why the pants gag?

The point of her reading it over and over, is that he can stop the hand painting job just when he wants, and just when it looks something like a bear shape. Also, the paint trays are placed in each corner, which naturally makes the kids gather around them in such a way, that they block painting on the sides, between the corners, in that way it becomes shaped something like an X, which is part of the shape of a teddybear. My guess is that he also placed "teddybear messages" for her up front.

@sdflksdfkfh I think that's the point. She convinces herself that she can see a bear even though it's just a big brown blob. It's like the way people see Jesus in their toast.
