In our efforts to design self-sustaining agricultural systems and eliminate the concept of waste, we are pioneering weed management strategies that can be incorporated as internal cycles of a relatively closed agro-ecological system. A highly mechanized method of mow-and-throw vineyard-mulching exists, in which grass from the vineyard lanes is cut and layed under the vines to smother weeds. However, the equipment to perform this task is very expensive, and is completely reliant on tractor power, limiting the usefulness of the mow-and-throw practice for small diversified farms, and animal powered farms. We have developed a method of mow and throw mulching which can be accomplished with equipment common on the small farm, and completely adaptable to animal power.
