David Peel was far more innovative than he's been given credit for, though John Lennon saw it. Malcom McClaren heard Peel in New York, went back to England and got The Sex Pistols to do a rip-off versions which they re-named Punk Rock. Just listen to songs like 'We are from the Lower East Side' and you'll see what I mean. The whole raucous, brash vocals and anti-establishment thing. Stuff like the Strangler's 'Peaches' is pure David Peel. Amazing that a hippy started Punk Rock back in '68!

Never met him, but my buddy did. He went to a rally in NYC; I think it was in '72. And David Peel was sitting on the blanket next to him! They hung out & had a blast; he said David is a really, really, really funny guy, all the time! He said he was hilarious. Anwaaay...rock on, all you beautiful people.

I was 16 yrs old in 1969. I lied to parents, hitched to NYC & saw David at (I think) the FIRST Earth Day.
He was singing "Have a Marijuana" and we all danced and laughed.
Now I live in gay ol' San Franc. & at 55, carry on the tradition !
