For combating troops in the open, behind cover or in slit trenches as well as soft-skinned vehicles and similar types of targets the 84 mm HE 441D has a special feature -- it can be set to impact detonation or air burst.
The 84 mm HE 441D's shell body is made of steel with inserts of rubber, containing some 800 steel pellets, enclosing the HE charge. When the round detonates the steel pellets are ejected to form an evenly
distributed, highly lethal cloud.
The shell is spin stabilised and fitted with a mechanical impact fuze, which detonates on the target. The time mode produces an air burst above the target at the required range.

  • Still the best out there.

  • The airbust round could destroy all the advance optics and instruments on a tank making it blind. Dumb round wins!

  • @abb8279 are you sure it was the CG and not AT4? CG ammo isnt fin stabilized what i know of or at least non of the granades i have fired but AT4 is fin stabilized.

  • I was looking at the Saab Bofors website and I realized that a lot of 84mm carl gustav ammunition like the HEAT rounds are fin stabilized. Why are some of them fin stabilized when the gun was made to spin stabilize its ammunition? Seems like they added unnecessary complexity to the ammunition. Anybody know what they are fin stabilizing some of the ammunition?

  • Sweden - Quality before quantity!

  • @Victortrotska thanks for the reply. :)

  • @ryeable Both 441B and D are the "same". The D version is improved over the B version. (better fuze and explosive)

  • @wepsone What is the difference between 441D and B? Direct and Burst?

  • @wepsone Is it dial adjusted in 10 or 50m increments?

  • @OHTEHWIN The optics are, obviously, on the outside of the tank. Otherwise they'd be looking at a blank wall of armor. Besides gun sights, you have the commander and driver's periscopes, roof gun, some radio implements, smoke launchers and on active/passive protection systems and ERA panels. All somewhat vulnerable, but that's not what an airburst round is for, of course.

  • Who were the poor volunteers who were getting shot at?

  • When was this, I can see it is old because of the helmets.
